old + old + old += new

I find it super interesting that we read about copyright but there is no specific class taught on copyright or plagiarism. It seems kinda funny, because most the time I feel expected to just know.

For instance, I was talking with another class mate about copyright but in a different manner. Copyrighting your own work, like is it right to use work from one class and use it in another even if it is a semester apart? No, it is not. But like, who is there to say?

Also, this just happened today. We are doing a group project for another class, and we have made a Facebook page for our project/event. I posted a video on Facebook, and five minutes later I get a message saying that the music may be copyrighted material and saying that I need to send a request to be able to have my video published. Like, hum, what? When did Facebook try to control what I upload, and for one they don't do that if you have a shared video via youtube, but if you upload directly to your site it supposivley doesn't like that.
So, like how do I prove to Facebook that we have rights to this song that we put on this video? WHO KNOWS!!!

It a fair use to not quite understand how copyright, or piracy, or plagiarism particularly works. But in all fairness, it changes all the time! New equipments, new technologies, new high top market material.
Like the article mentions, it i a cultural moment, its all in the systems and how more people find ways around them than follow them usefully.

Chapter Thirteen:

Eldred was a smart individual. I remember when Free databases on a public domain were just hitting the school systems when I was in the second grade --- roughly after 9/11

Thought, allowing things to available for free online sounds like a great idea and can work great. There are always those people that ruin the system  and ruin it for everybody.

Corruption
Congress
Copyright

ALL play a role in this new found database of 1995. So, the people that got ahold of copyrighted material before copyright was a thing are fake millionaires that karma is going to find because they stole it!!!

Uhg, it's such a screwy situation, cause like now how do you know what is copyright and what isn't cause the rules change all the time.

"Eric Eldred was fighting a piracy that affects us all"
Page 220

"Eric Eldred discovered, we have set up a system that assures that copyright terms will be repeatedly extended, and extended, and extended. We have created the perfect storm for the public domain. Copyrights have not expired, and will not expire, so long as
Congress is free to be bought to extend them again."
Page 221

This is what scares me the most, is that copyright terms are extended and the perfect storm is going to have no end in site unless the internet somehow magically become obsolete. But it's also like, you end up seeing that same piece or that same article else where just a slight tweak to make it an "unoriginal"

Old..... Soul..... Baby

For being 1969 Woodstock, I love the quality of this photo, and the guys camera protected by duct tape and cardboard. Just makes we wish we could experience life in the 60's.... and 70's.... and 80's...... I feel like I was there then, like I can remember but technically I wasn't.

Lessing Pages 53-79

"teaching writing
is only about teaching kids how to spell.
Text is one part—and increasingly, not the most powerful part"

With having the younger of the generation only learn on computer is pretty absurd. How are they are going to write? How are they going to get the flow, to have the right grip while you write. It UNFORTUNATELY
Does not come completely natural like feeding our faces does.

This discusses the very importance of writing, and how it is slowly decreasing out of school systems. Cause now, Microsoft word is the grader and word tells us when there is a misplaced comma, or period, when a word is spelled incorrectly, if we have run-on sentences, it adds hyphens for us! The possibilities that they don't exactly know the constructive uses of those elements is quite disappointing.

"Television and newspapers are commercial entities.
They must work to keep attention.
If they lose readers, they lose revenue.
Like sharks, they must move on.
But bloggers don’t have a similar constraint."

Blogs in a norm have a different way of adapting and does not have an absence since it's the creator that is sharing the information not just an organization. It creates more of a life and like for the nature of a blog. Fortunately they are easy to come by and easy to fulfill, unfortunately there are to many of them to weed out in order to find the PERFECT story. And that is where the newspaper and the commercial people come into play, is that they can make anything seem as entertainment versus bad news or good news. They can make something super negative seem like an everyday occurrence, and one never forgets it.

Moving on! I find it so hilarious that Film, Recorded Music, Radio, Cable TV, were all born out of piracy. WHICH in today's culture, is highly illegal and one could not get away with it anymore. But why would one want to pirate those now? They already made million, now pirating a time machine. That's a different story.

Hopefully this works!

In efforts to calm myself of all the stresses of life, I went and found myself another four-leaf clover today!! I have found three in one particular patch this year, pretty magical.

Lessing (Free Culture) Pages 7-30

"But in the end, the force of what seems “obvious” to everyone else—the power of “common sense”—would prevail. Their “private interest” would not be allowed to defeat an obvious public gain."

Interestingly enough, this was said at the end of the Wright Brothers, but it has to do with out technology age today - Decades later.

Armstrong, what a strong man to be able to figure out electric induction. But weirdly enough, it only took him 100 years for a patent to be issued for the mist significant invention in history. The Radio!!!
The radio, only took TWO YEARS for thousands of them and stations to be all over America.
Today, it only takes a few HOURS for the latest iPhone to be distributed by MILLIONS across the WORLD. Damn

What a good guy to keep his wits about him with FM radio, cause nobody likes AM radio..? Unless you are in the middle of no where!!!

"this book is about an effect of the Internet beyond the Internet
itself: an effect upon how culture is made"

Even just amongst reading the introduction, this is a very informative book. ( I really enjoy books that say "I" and the author talks about themselves, it just seems to add a personalized touch.

Chapter one:
It all starts with one great idea one "Creator" that nobody really knows, or knows where it came from. Like Steamboat Willie to Mickey Mouse, it was "inspired" by mickey mouse. Therefore turned into "borrowing" we deal with this all the time as college students in the technology age of "stealing" information, or borrowing information it totally changes the concept of learning or being individual.

"The public domain in 1928 was not very old and was
therefore quite vibrant." (Page 24)

We today, are very IN with the times, and are very like a meh attitude.

POL Chapter 10!

This can be a scary chapter.... Global flow based upon our technologies and cultural acceptances. Oh boy. Uhhm, everybody knows where we are at anytime. With Facebook, and the "must" to post every single little thing, and with satellites and drones everybody knows everything. We are no longer private, even in an enclosed room with our laptop or phone, that little camera is not always off. The flow can generate so much, and who's to say if it's negative or positive, that depends on what subject is really being discussed.
Even though a lot of things have global dominance over others, I still find it super important to go and find the little guy and support them! Our culture today is turning in a way that really is not pretty, I could go on and on but I am just happy the way I live my life...
Anyway, off track.... Global art is amazing, fortunately and unfortunately we can access is whenever we want via internet. The saddest part, is that there is SO MUCH more that we are missing when we view art on the internet. We are missing out on the environment, the surroundings, the personal feeling, the colors in the room, But we can view it and discuss it. Maybe remember it because we live such busy lives, how do we really remember anything anymore? It's not just a rhythm we get it on a daily basis but a path that we keep stomping. Art and the global view and culture needs help. I really don't have high hopes for the future, I am actually quite scared for the next five years. But I know that there are great people on my side, and lots of well newly educated individuals.

POL Chapter 8

Okay! Just upon reading the title I instantly became more interested.

I found it really intriguing that they start a "Popular Culture" chapter based on China... since China does rule our world in a sense it is only a matter of production.

Page 311 "Thus, postmodernity refers not just to a style and a form of subjectivity that emerged in late modernity. It also refers to changes in the social and economic conditions that help to produce these style and ways of being a subject..."
So, basically it depends on societal acceptance of a factor for it to be submerged into the art world as a modern piece...

Money + People + Fads + Time + Acceptance + Technology = (Art)

On Page 320, I never knew that about Shrek!!!! I knew it was filled with humor, but not " reflexive jokes about representation", and it makes sense as to why kids love shrek so much is because he is 'different' than the rest of the characters in the movie, and I know that every kid feels different in some shape or form so Shrek was a comfort zone to kids everywhere.
I love the inside joke that the producers have about having a princess know martial arts.

Once again, mass + popular culture + money + Postmodernism - modernism = Today

The lady on the front is in this chapter fyi!

POL Chapter Two Reading

Just looking at the title of the chapter I could tell that this was going to be an intense chapter.

Viewer= the most basic sense of the term, and individual who looks
Audience = a collective of lookers

Producer = is a person who identifies financing and oversees the many jobs involved in a production.
The producer can have many hidden meanings in a piece of work, anything from a sculpture, to 3-D to 2-D to virtual, to video.
Anywhom, authority is what address power that is enacted between viewers and producers of images and media texts. That allows deciphering and interpretations.

Page 57:
Kitsch: formerly referred to images and objects that are trite, cheaply sentimental, and formulaic; associated with mass-produced objects that offer cheap or gaudy versions of classical beauty...... Like dang.
This word really struck my attention, I really like learning new words!!

Like Lava Lamps.

Sensus Communis: A metaphysical principle that links us in a community at the level of our senesce and our bodies (pg 57)

The ending of the chapter was a great ending with the visualization of Adrian Piper, she should definitely be an inspiration to everyone! She has done so much research to make sure her art has a precise description. But at the same time, she supplies many different approaches towards the culture within the community to show her art(s).

Project One!

Even though that this is due today! Or last week.... Something like that.
I wanted to do something along the line of something to do with a blind side.
I came up with that idea while driving and having people hanging out in my blind spot.
Then I got the idea of using my uncle kevin since he is actually blind.

Anywhom, I wanted to do something that was people were "blind" about.
One of our lovely classmates mentioned mental illness, and that is right up my alley!!

I have an aunt who was mentally ill - she was diagnosed with schizophrenia in her early 20's. After she was diagnosed everyone's life was turned to basically hell. It was believed that she was diagnosed with drug induced schizo, which most people are diagnosed from that way.

Billboard:
The billboard is made the way it is because it allows the eye to move across the page and feel different emotions. The faded faces show many different emotions, and the two strong faces on the sides show how quickly ones mood can change with a mental illness such as schizo.

The Ad:
The ad was just simple, but eye catching at the same time. I added the local NAMI site for societal engagement. I took the sunset picture in the background in the mountains. But showing someone the light can change everyone's life!

The Poster:
The poster is telling someone many different things.
Can you tell who lived with mental illness?
Vivien Leigh - Robin Williams - Vincent Van Gogh

Mental Illness is.....

The thought behind this is that you cannot tell who lives with mental illness. Everyone in the poster lived with some sort of mental illness - all of them schizo or along the lines of.

It's a trick, cause you cannot tell.

THANKS

Ego Surf!!!

When I googled myself - I first had to sign myself out of google or else google just showed me everything that I had uploaded to google!

When I googled myself, I did not find my direct self for there are many Emily Williams (') in the world!

I instead put in Emily Williams Grand Coulee WA. Then bam! Everything that I have been involved in up there showed up. Especially when I was in ad's in the Star Newspaper of Grand Coulee.
Also, when I searched that, my LinkedIn AND Facebook showed up, as well as my blogger.

It was vey interesting, cause also I watched my friends with unique names pop up their names and their names popped up instantly!!! So, you never know what google knows.

POL Chapter One Reading

Starting the chapter out with 'representation' was just what I wanted to read at a time like this. As I have been thinking about our project number one non stop, I am excited to say that this will be interesting to put together a billboard..... anyway off track.

"A photograph is often perceived to be an unmediated copy of the real world, a trace of reality skimmed off the very surface of life, and evidence of the real" (p. 17)

This quote is very powerful, cause photography is now in an even bigger debate than ever! Because of photoshop, or other amateur photo editing programs, have ruined photo's. One now does not know what is real, or what the picture is saying what it is actually saying. Yah know?

Charles Sander's Peirce had the best idea, because NOW sign interpretation are basically how civilization lives! For example, road signs, emoji's, keyboards, cell phones, apps! EVERYTHING! We cannot get away from it.

Semiotic images have taken over, and that is the exact reason why I am going to college for it.

"
Signifier is the entity that represents
sign is the combination of the signifier and what it means
The Image (or word) and its meaning together (the signifier and signified together) for the sign

Image/sound/word = signifier
meaning = signified

"

Good Job Peirce!

Reading Response - Intro & Chpt 6

First off, I really enjoy how they use term "visual culture" to open with the introduction. Though, the term visual culture can be interpetted in many different ways. It's super funny but not funny how just fifteen years ago one did not think to make many practices in the mixed media realm.
As few may know, I did not know that interdisciplinary field did not arise until the 1970's. Dang!

"Culture as an understanding of fluid and interactive process..."

Even though, I find it kind of funny to start in the middle of the book. BUT Media in Everday Life should be one of the first things to be learned in a class such as ours.

It is definitely a trip to think about how much we use technology in a daily basis, or even just the first few hours in the morning. I find it really hard to keep up with technology on a daily basis because it changes so much throughout time! Also, the biggest problem is money, one needs money to keep up with the technology times and that in itself is hard to maintain.

The idea of "The Masses" on page 224 just tickles me inside because my grandpa used to use that term all the time and I finally know what he means by the masses. The masses all go together, like a herd of sheep, I am proud to say that I have no become part of the masses, (Yes, I have in a sense, BUT not as much as a person in this society would consider).

Media in a sense, has taken over the world. Did we really know before hand that china has paved roads of gold?

"The whole world is passed through the filter of the culture industry" pg. 241
THIS QUOTE IS AMAZING! Our eyes are focused on what we know and see and experience everyday, we are the main subject of the culture industry.

Politics on the other hand -------> Not going there.
